I've had man sewing going on at my house...mini-man sewing, that is. My grandson Corey is 13 and has been collecting t-shirts from various activities. He also loves quilts and blankets. He came to me a couple of months ago and asked if I would help him make a t-shirt quilt. I of course, said "yes." The one and only rule I had was that he had to do the work himself. My role was to be as advisor (and "fix-it" when things go wrong). He agreed and we got started.
Corey chose the t-shirts, cut the squares out with rotary cutter (which he thinks is very cool), choose the sashing and border fabrics, and did the sewing. Our first session involved cutting the shirts and shopping for fabric. We visited a local quilt shop (which he though was better than sliced bread and told his mom they should shop there more often) and chose fabrics to coordinate with his shirts. The red tone-on-tone is the sashing and the multi swirl is for the outer border.
Our next session involved cutting our sashing strips and sewing the sashing to the shirts. He was very good at the machine with fairly consistent seams.
Here is his work on our first sewing day...we have just outer borders left for a finished quilt top.
Corey and I will reconvene again in March to finish the borders and get it ready for quilting and binding.
Till next time...
